PRIVATE AND NONCOMMERCIAL USE ONLY

01/02/24: Release 1.0.5 (Initial release of the PALMSensei)
Now you have the possibility to learn the Japanese alphabet when and where you want! The PALMSensei is an application for Palm/Handspring handhelds, which helps you in learning the Japanese Hiragana and Katakana alphabets. You can train the syllable of a character and also the writing of the character itself. It is also possible to just browse the alphabet. The following screenshots give you an overview of the functionality:

![]() The training screen for the syllable training. The Japanese character is
displayed on the left and the user types his guess on the right side. |
![]() The training screen for the character writing. The syllable for the Japanese character is displayed on the left and the user paints the character on the right side. |

You may use the PALMSensei freely for private and noncommercial purposes.
I was planning to port the JAVASensei to the Palm platform for quite a while. Initial experiments with the old Jump release were not successful. After Sun's KVM release and the great work of the kAWT project, I decided that it was the right time to do the port with a minimal rework of the code. Since I only had an old skool 512KB PalmPilot, I had to test the code on the Palm OS Emulator which worked well. The main obstacle was definitely to squeeze the 208 images of the alphabet characters into the Palm. In order to keep the generated class code for the image graphics under the 64kB limit, I compiled the original alphabet graphic files into two static integer arrays, one for each alphabet. The displayed bitmap graphic is then generated at runtime from the integer array. Fortunately I now also have now a 8MB handspring at reach, so I can even use the PALMSensei myself :)
Enjoy!
