The
untold
truth about
Joachim Tesch
A star is born
Joachim Tesch (in some countries also known under his artist name John Tesh) was born December 21st, 1969. He lived the first few years in Muensingen, a small cozy village on top of the Swabian Jura in the wild south of Germany. In 1975 he emigrated
20 miles westward to Reutlingen. This town was not a formative influence on
the counterculture.
Boolean influence
As a 14 year old boy, he first was introduced to a Commodore PET computer which led him to buy a VIC-20 homecomputer a few months later. Other computers followed (C64, Amiga1000, PC). These machines wrapped up our hero with their infinite creative power. He spent the following years moving tiny abstract objects on a screen using a plastic stick. Bizarre.
Education grabs him
First there was Kindergarten. They showed J.T. how to tie his shoes. He learned to draw colourful neo-dadaistic pictures. After four years of fun at the Jos-Weiss-Schule (elementary school), it
was time to go to the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium (secondary school). In 1989 he made his final examinations.
In 1990, after 13 months of community service at the local hospital, Mr. Tesch starts to study Computer Science at the
University of Tuebingen. Fascinated by computer graphics, he begins to
focus on this subject. As part of his study work at
GRIS, the department of computer
graphics, he examined several mathematical methods for creating interpolating curves. The study work was completed with an
implemented C++ class for the creation of dynamic (acceleration, deceleration, constant speed) camera movements (1995).
On July 8th 1996, he started his master's thesis at the Daimler-Benz Research Center
in Ulm. He developed a three-dimensional user-interface for Virtual Environments using an object-oriented approach. From February 1997 until
April 1997 he took the opportunity to work as a freelancer to develop a Virtual Reality viewer application on Windows 95/NT platforms,
taking advantage of the emerging OpenGL accelerator boards. Then money was there for the long awaited three month U.S.A.
vacation. A journey from westcoast to eastcoast, filmed with a 25 year old Super8 camera. 23 film reels later he returned to
Germany to work as a freelance programmer and consultant for the Dresdner Bank AG in Frankfurt. He
returned to Reutlingen in July 1998 and is now filling his banking account by
working as a freelance Java-Programmer. In his spare time he's playing around with
OpenGL and studying the secrets of the Japanese language.
