Director John Schlesinger captures the grime and slime and reality of New York with great geniality.Hoffman and Voight were both nominated as best actor in 1969, but lost to John Wayne. The movie won the directing, writing and best picture oscars. It is the only X-rated (Explicit language. Scrabble?) picture ever to win an Oscar as best movie to the year.
