2001 - A Space Odyssey (USA 1968)
"What are we going to do with the HAL9000?"
Cast: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood and Douglas Rain as HAL9000
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Based on the short story The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke, this outstanding movie takes the
viewer on a outrageous trip from the early ages of mankind towards insterstellar travels, placing space
travel in context with man's history. The movie is famous
for the combination of a classic soundtrack, which features Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra and
An der schoenen blauen Donau, with spaceship scenes. Large black monoliths, accompanied by
a unique confusing chorus sound, guide the viewer throughout the movie. The movie was
nominated for four Oscars including directing and writing, but only won in the category for
special visual effects.
When I first saw the movie, I was completely disappointed. In my young, naive way, I expected some kind
of Star Wars-like space battle orgy. But luckily I gave this movie a second chance (and many more
followed) and then liked it more and more. I am especially taken with the very
confusing end. If you like this movie: be sure to check out Arthur C. Clarke's readings of the last
chapters, which is available on MC.
